How to move your household documents out of Evernote
Install the Evernote desktop app, because export does not exist on the web. Export the notebooks holding your paperwork as multi-page HTML if you want the attachments back as real files, or as ENEX if you are moving to another note app. Open the result before you cancel anything.
Why do household documents end up stuck in a note app?
A note app is a good place to put a thing quickly. Over years that adds up to a second filing cabinet nobody planned: the appliance warranty scanned into a note, the lease as an attachment, three photographs of a passport page, and a note called Untitled holding the only copy of something.
The awkward part is that a document inside a note is not really a file anymore. It is a passenger. Getting it back out is a separate job from exporting your notes, and the two exports look almost the same in the menu.
What do the current plan limits allow?
Worth knowing before you plan the move, because they decide whether you can keep the account around as a read-only copy while you settle in somewhere else.

A single-device limit is the one that bites during a move: the machine you install the desktop app on may not be the machine currently signed in.
Which export format should you pick?
Evernote offers three, and the choice decides what you end up holding.

Most people leaving with paperwork want the third one. If you are also moving your actual notes into another note app, run the export twice — once as ENEX for the notes, once as multi-page HTML for the documents.

Two things go missing quietly. A note's title often carried meaning the file name does not, and a note body sometimes held a detail — an account number, who to call — that no attachment repeats. Skim for both before you downgrade or cancel.
Where do the documents go next?
A folder per notebook on your own disk is a completely respectable answer, and it is better than the situation you started in. The question it leaves open is the same one that pushed everything into a note app in the first place: in two years, will you remember which folder holds the appliance warranty?

Frequently asked questions
Can I export from Evernote in a browser?
No. Evernote's help page says exporting is only available in the desktop app for Mac or Windows, and cannot be done on Evernote Web (checked July 2026). If you have been using Evernote in a browser or on a phone, installing the desktop app is the first step of leaving.
What is an ENEX file, and can I open one without Evernote?
ENEX is Evernote's own XML format: one file holding many notes, with the attachments packed inside it rather than sitting beside it as PDFs. Several other note apps import ENEX directly. What it is not is a folder of documents — if what you want back is the PDFs and photos, the HTML export gets you closer.
How do I get the attached PDFs back as ordinary files?
Export the notebook as multi-page HTML instead of ENEX. Evernote writes one HTML page per note and puts that note's attachments alongside it, so the PDFs and images land on disk as files you can open, copy and upload elsewhere. Export a small notebook this way first and look at what appears before you do the whole account.
What does Evernote's free plan actually allow now?
As listed on evernote.com's plan comparison in July 2026: 50 notes, 1 notebook, 20 tags, 1 synced device, 1 GB of storage and 200 attachments. Starter raises that to 1,000 notes, 20 notebooks, 3 devices and 5 GB. Those numbers are why a household archive built up over years stops fitting.
Should I cancel my subscription as soon as the export finishes?
Open the exported files first. Check that a note with a scanned PDF really produced a PDF you can open, that the dates you cared about came across, and that nothing important lived only in a note's title. A downgraded account with more notes than the free plan allows is an awkward place to discover a gap.
